Color Your Holidays - The PERFECT Gift for Your Creative Types This Year!

Image
We've had this tradition in my family ever since my Mum was the Christmas frontrunner. Whenever we went shopping in December, she'd buy one or two small gifts that were on sale or within budget so wehen we got to Christmas time there were always gifts left over. She'd use them if we were going to a Christmas party of if we had some unexpected guests come for Lunch on the day.  At the time I just thought she was hoarding and buying gifts for the sake of it but as I've grown, I've realised how smart and generous she was with this practice. Not all gifts actually did fit in the budget but Mum loved giving so much I think she'd stretch it a little more every year! And now, twently years down the track, a mother and a wife - I do it too! I have a cupboard full of gifts to suit almost everyone and no - theyre not all art supplies that I haven't got around to using! But this year, one of the biggest gifts I wanted to give was a brand new set of Coloring Books, de

Colour In - But Do The Work

Colour In - But Do The Work How I use Art to Distract me from doing Emotional Work. So I started this blog as a way to increase potential for my amazon affiliate links - it was a side hustle and it was also a way for me to express how greatful I am to art as a mindfulness tool.  I figured in my own little mind that the two things could be mutually beneficial and they are. I love being an amazon affiliate and last week I spent my commission sending a gift to a friend in the U.S.A. But anything (and I mean anything) can be used as a diservice to your mental health. Too much of anything, the wrong intentions, the wrong agenda and it throws off the whole wellness mission and that's what I want to talk about today. Think about this for a minute. Did you start art as a way to relax and now own more supplies than you could ever need? Did you join the gym as a positive step towards health and now feel guilty if you dont go every day? Did you find yourself passionate about a message, so mu

Are Star Joy Gold Edition the next MUST HAVE Budget Pencil Set?

Image
Are Star Joy Gold Edition the next MUST HAVE Budget Pencil Set? Call it progress or call it reverse engineering but cheaper coloured pencils are getting better. Those passionate about pencil art seem to want more options for beginner artists or hobbyists who dont have the means to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollar and with that in mind, and manufacturers appear to be listening! With that in mind, let me introduce you to Star Joy Gold 120. First Impressions The first thing that I noticed about the Star Joy colored pencils was the way they feel. The barrel casings have a velvety matte finish unline anything I've ever held before and while it may not make a difference to performance, appearance is everthing right? They're nice to hold and look fantastic in their colour sets One of the first things you notice when you open the box though is the order does seem a little strange - and there's a fantastic reason why, explained by StarJoy themselves in the video below.    Swat

Can We Colour for Mindfulness - My Coloring Origin Story!

Image
Can we Colour for Mindfulness - My Coloring Origin Story! When I say I haven't been colouring for long, that doesn't included the sheer and innocent joy of colouring as a child does it? As a child, I was the quintessential 'inside kid' and my favourite things to do were write and colour - funny how things work out right? Cut to the adult coloring craze of 2016 and I was an adult with a long history of mental illness who needed an outlet. My major depressive disorder, cultivated from trauma and genetics was the perfect storm and I was in the centre. Finding coloring again was such a balm for me at first and diving head first back into the art reminded me of this childhood joy.  In 2021 I was made redundant, a mother again (to a boy this time - what do you do with those?) and in the midst of a global pandemic when the Universe handed me one more chance. I was blessed to come and work for a very successful pencil artist and this by default reminded me of my love for colo

Adult Coloring Books Red Flags

Coloring Book Red Flags - What I Look for and Why it Matters We live in a world of AI now and even before this became a thing, there were literally millions of adult coloring books in the world for you to choose from. Overwhelming much?  A quick search on Amazon (the australian site) yields over 70,000 search results for the phrase 'adult coloring book' and over 48 pages of books to sift through and if you're like me, that's just too much sifting and not enough coloring! So here is a quick list of things that I like in my coloring book that might help you, coupled with some examples of my favourite books and why. Note that this blog isn't about the content of the book - color whatever pictures you like! But I can help you navigate a few important points! It's also worth noting that these are my opinions and my opinions only.  I have not been paid to endorse the  coloring books I've recommended in this blog and completely understand that everyone is entitle

Pencils - What are They Made From and Why?

Pencils - What are They Made From and Why You Should Care. Colored pencils typically contain the same combination of materials, varying in only the volume of each addition. In this blog, we'll cover what's contained in your pencil core and why so you can make an informed decision when buying your first colored pencil set or extanding your pencil collection. For more information, check out the resources at the bottom of the page. Pencils always include pigments or dyes, binder and extender and here's a break down of why. Pigments & Dyes Pigments and dyes provide the all important color of a colored pencil and can be made up from many different things. Commonly, pigments are either organic, that is naturally occuring, or inorganic - manmade.  "The majority of inorganic pigments are brighter and last longer than organic ones. Organic pigments made from natural sources have been used for centuries, but most pigments used today are either inorganic or synthetic organic
